Family Time on the Pacific

My hubby and I are on a 2 week vacation with our kids, Reilly and Sage. We've been here for only a day, but it seems like a week. We left Southern California and landed in Costa Rica. From there we took a small plane to the Nicoya Peninsula. We spent the night with friends that have a great house here close to Tambor, and we bathed in their salt water pool and relaxed.

The kids just loved bouncing around in the pool all night. Phil and I got wasted with our friends... cocktails on the deck. We slept soundly. This morning we went horseback riding along the beach. When it became to unbearably hot we went back to the house. In the afternoon we rented a car and drove up the coast, and ended up checking into a swank beach resort hotel.

I feel like were on Fantasy Island, with all the hotel staff catering to our every need. The people at reception were very warm and informative. We decided to check in for one night, and just play it by ear. I wouldnt mind just staying here for the remainder of our vacation, but well see what Phil says. After checking out our room--- so beautiful ( I cant wait to see the view in the morning), we walked around the gardens and took in the night air, while the kids played in the pool.

The kids have taken their showers, and are now dozing off . Phil is watching a game on the big screen. I think I have it all planned out, thanks to the guys at reception. In the morning I'll see what the kids have to say.

Id like to go horseback riding tomorrow morning after breakfast. Theres a tour that will take us riding along the beach and then into the reserve down some forested pathways. Apparently it will take us through some private farms and pastures, through both primary and secondary growth forests. The kids want to see monkeys, and sloths, and parrots, and pumas but I just want to enjoy a nice ride with the family.

In the afternoon I figure we can all hang out at the pool, that is, in the event we decide on staying another night at this posth resort. In the early evening we can go boating while we watch the sunset. A place near here charters trips cheaply. It's so tropical here. A jungle. The dense jungle comes right up to the shore. Howler monkeys can be heard from miles away. On occasion, a flock of small green parrots soar about ... squalking up a storm and then fading into the distance.

I was told about a tour that will take us on a night hike through the reserve to see what lurks in the dark. Nocturnal tarantulas prowl, and armadillos trudge around. Hummingbirds sleep and bats boom around overhead. I'm curious to experience that. I'm out of there the first sign of a mosquito, though. I'll be back here in this posh resort, taking a bubble bath, sipping tea and listening to my ipod.

Should You Expect Much Assembly From a RTR(Ready to Run) RC Boat?

Before buying a rc model boat realize they come with different assembly requirements. Builders' kits are for the serious hobbyist, while the almost ready and ready to run kits, require only basic tools and skills.

You'll find the lower priced plastic models, such as the Traxxas Blast, only require installing the radio receiver batteries. Other than that these rc boats are ready to go right out of the box.

Even though the electrics are the easiest to use and maintain, some of us, who like tinkering with 2 strokes but not the boat assembly part, prefer the ready to run gas or nitro rc boats.

Just so you can get an idea of what to expect as far as assembly goes, what follows is what I had to do to get my first gas rtr rc boat ready for the water. This is a hobby grade boat that will go 50mph with no modifications.The assembly required is pretty typical for this kind of boat.

For this example, the boat I bought was the 48" Osprey with the Zenoah 26cc gas engine. This boat will go 50 mph without any modifications. Like a lot of these fast rc boats you can buy online, they are manufactured in China, so the directions are not the best.

After about an hour of figuring out the directions, the Osprey was ready to go. It was really simple, I should of been able to complete everything in 20 minutes max. Sometimes you find you're missing parts. Luckily, this time, it was only a standard allen wrench.

The engine had 4 nuts and bolts that just had to be checked for tightness. Then there was the radio box. On this model there was nothing to do but install the batteries. On some models you have to glue the radio box in place as well as install and attach the servos. So after that, all you have to do is attach the rudder and propeller hardware and that's it. Oh yeah I forgot ...if you see a straw like tube that's for the antenna wire .

At this point you are either ready for the lake or depending on what type of engine you're using, there might be a recommended breaking-in procedure. Go online and find out what's the best way to accomplish this. In my case the Zenoah did not need to be broken-in, it had been done at the factory. My first day at the lake was a total success.

So you are never going to get a "ready to run" boat in the strict sense of the word.. There will be some assembly require, but it's real basic (sometimes only installing the batteries) and usually takes under an hour.

Neumann Microphones Past and Present; A History of Sonic Perfection

Georg Neumann introduced the world's first commercially available condenser microphone, the Neumann CMV, and officially put his new company Neumann on the map. The interchangeable capsules offered different directional patterns, and it was hard to miss at 40 cm tall and 9cm in diameter. Due its large profile it became known as the "Neumann bottle." The Classic Neumann CMV 3 became almost iconic and can be seen in many historical photographs of public events in Germany, especially those taken during the period of World War II.

After the Neumann factory in Berlin was damaged by Allied bombing in November 1943, Georg Neumann moved his company to the town of Gefell and resumed production in the early months of 1944. After the war ended, this Gefell fell under Soviet control and Neumann became a "people's corporation.After the reunification of Germany, the Neumann company now located in Gefell became known as Microtech Gefell.

After re-establishing his company in one of the allied sectors of Berlin under the new name Georg Neumann GmbH, a new switchable pattern microphone was developed, the famous U 47, which was based on the M7 capsule of the previous CMV3 microphones. The Neumann U47 was one of the first condenser microphones to be widely used in recording studios around the world. Neumann microphones were used by The Beatles giving their recording a signature sound which had better upper midrange response, and sounded sharper and more present.

Post-war, Neumann developed the famous M49 and M50, both of which used the M7 capsule, and later during the 50's the KM 53, 54, and 56. In 1957 Neumann introduced the first stero microphone, which was essentially a pair of KM56 microphones housed in the same body and capable of being remotely controllled. Many 50's rock 'n roll recordings were distinguished by the up close, high volume, overdriven sound of the U47 and U48, which produced a harsh sound, loved by some and frowned upon by others. Just as this trend was developing, the VF 14 vacuum tube was discontinued by its manufacturer Telefunken, leaving the U47 and U48 without an essential component, which led to the development of the subsequent U67.

The first Neumann solid state microphones apeared in the mid-sixties with the KTM and U77, which were transistorized versions of previous Neumann microphones. Phantom power was first introduced by Neumann in 1966 in its Neumann U87 capacitor microphone, a method which had previously been used by telephone companies now allowed Georg Neumann to connect his solid state, tube, and dynamic microphones all to the same power source.

Neumann introduced the TLM 170 in the 80's, which featured no output transformer, and instead had balanced outputs. The transformerless microphone design was expanded to include the KM100 which featured seven different changeable active capsules, the TLM 193 which used the capsule of the U89 and TLM 170, the KM 180 series, the TLM 103 large diaphragm condenser, the variable pattern TLM 127 variable pattern condenser and the TLM 49 cardiod vocal microphone.

During the 90's, Neumann introduced a revolutionary series of vacuum tube microphones that featured transformerless output circuitry.Widely sought after still today, the Neumann M149 tube microphone, the M147 cardioid tube microphone and the M 150 tube microphone, are all based on the M 50 design that was developed with the pressure transducer mounted directly on the surface of the sphere inside the capsule head. The iconic Neumann company was bought by Sennheiser in 1991, and production was moved to a brand new level 100 clean factory in Wedermark, but official Neumann headquarters remained in Berlin.

In 2003 Neumann revolutionized the recording industry again with the Solution-D D-01, which features built-in analog-to-digital conversion. The D-01 was followed a few years later by a modular, small-diaphragm series of digital microphones, the KM D which was based on the earlier KM 100/180 series. It was during this time that Neumann also developed its first dynamic microphone, the BCM 705 broadcast microphone.

How to get into Harvard in 30 minutes

Take care of your school GPA from 9th grade/freshman year

Some students like to slack-off after middle school - it's a new environment, you may not know where the water fountains are, you're still getting use to the teachers. But a poor 9th grade GPA can kill your chances to get into Ivy League schools.

You may think that one or two C's can be made up later by plenty of AP and Honors classes, but colleges pay attention to your FULL TRANSCRIPT. A few C's in relatively easy courses like American History or World Geography will make Harvard think that you can't handle even basic academic material. It doesn't matter if you're 15 or 50. Your high school GPA matters - all four years.

Prepare for and take the SAT early

In an earlier post on SAT scores for college admissions, I discuss the "minimum" score for Ivy League admissions.

My overall advice is that you should shoot for a perfect score but be happy with a "good score" (anything above 2100). Don't take the test too many times - anything more than 2 or 3 without huge 100+ strides each time just makes you look desperate and incapable.

You should also take the test as early as possible - take the Duke University TIP in 7th grade, take the PSAT in freshman year or sophomore year at least once. It's great practice, and it won't go on your permanent score transcript and Harvard won't be mad that you got a 1800 as a 9th grader in high school.

It's a great opportunity for practice that has no consequences. Why wouldn't you do that?

Get involved in clubs from day one

Notice my advice here - an early start is ideal for Ivy League candidates. By joining different activities and clubs your freshman year, you demonstrate to Harvard that you are committed to specific interests/passions.

Ideally, you should stay in those same clubs over at least a couple years. However, if you find that the German Club is really not where you'd prefer spending Thursday afternoon, that's ok too - just make sure you're not using the time watch TV cartoons.

Diversify a little bit

I usually say it's more about stories than it is about being well-rounded. After all, college admissions offices want well-rounded student bodies but don't need everyone to be a perfect microcosm.

Build a core, related set of interests

By having a coherent theme - for instance, a passion for inner city issues or a love of music (as shown through participation in things like the String Orchestra and involvement in music-related nonprofits) is a great way to build a CLEAR AND UNIQUE IDENTITY that, if strong enough, is your best shot at getting into Ivy League schools.

Visit campuses

By visiting target schools, you show a clear interest. Plus, you'll meet people during your time on campus that will help you decide whether you're a better fit for Harvard or Yale, Princeton or Brown.

Prepare for alumni interviews

IMPORTANT - don't forget to start doing this early. If you're a strong candidate, this isn't something that you wait until the last minute to get ready for.

The ideal way to prepare for admissions interviews is to practice interviews with older people - not your brother or your best friend. Have them ask you questions about your accomplishments, your life story, your reasons for wanting to attend Princeton.

Koi Pond Aeration - Oxygen level is Critical

The Oxygen level in your Koi pond is something you probably don't think about very often, but it is critical. To ignore it is a big mistake. Some koi owners don't understand the need for simple aeration of their pond for the health of their fish. This is even more important in the warmest months.

There are several reasons why you need to pay attention to the oxygen level in the pond. First, its critical for the fish - this goes without saying. But it is also necessary for any vegetation you may have in the pond and most importantly for the critical chemical processes that go on including bacterial decomposition. Every pond has its own unique oxygen demand and it's constantly changing. It's affected by the number of fish and the amount of plant decomposition that goes on in the pond.

There is just so much oxygen that can be absorbed into water at any given time. It depends on factors such as the temperature of the water, movement of the water (aeration) and salinity. Since we're talking about freshwater ponds here, salinity is not a factor to worry about.

Since warm water cannot absorb as much oxygen, during the warmest months of the year, Koi pond aeration becomes very important. Watch the oxygen level in you pond carefully when it gets hot. Keep it at least between 5.0 and5.5 mg per liter.

Find ways to keep the water moving. This will allow higher oxygen absorption rates. Oxygen levels can drop very quickly in water that is standing an become dangerous for your fish. Fountains placed in the pond, are a great way to keep the water moving.

Check the amount of algae growth in the pond. Algae will add oxygen during the day but will deplete oxygen during the night. Too much algae can be a real problem for several reasons but affecting the oxygen level is certainly an important one.

If you must feed your fish during the heat of the day, remember they will utilize more oxygen then if they feed in the cooler hours. That's why the oxygen level can quickly drop dangerously low if your fish are feeding in the heat of the day and the water temperature is the warmest.

Good pond aeration can go a long way toward helping you manage the oxygen level in your pond. The addition of a water feature such as a fountain or small waterfall will provide good circulation and add beauty to your pond.

Children Off to Summer Camp in Minnesota

The North woods of Minnesota is more than the pristine beauty of lakes, forests and eagles flying overhead. To me it's Summer Camp! Swift Nature Camp is so much more than another home with another family, it's a special Minnesota Camp

This summer home is filled with acceptance, love, encouragement, and true, down to earth friends who you will end up calling your camp family. Your counselors act as parents, older siblings, etc. They are great people to look up to. The campers are great friends for life. You may even end up looking at them as siblings. Acceptance is everywhere, no one kicks you out of the cabin because of who you are. Your uniqueness is celebrated. This is the main reason why I love Swift Nature Camp...it's so much more than just having fun.

When you're not on canoe or backpack trips and just at camp, there is so much to do, you can never fit it all in. Other fun activities to do at camp are archery, swimming, fishing, boating, tubing, and riflery. I loved being active all day. What is real neat is rather you are a beginner or an expert in an area its ok. The counselors help you get better. All activities are noncompetitive and so we all support each other, rather than worry who is best.

When I think of Swift, I think of trips. I'll never forget the Superior Hiking Trail or going to Ely. What an adventure! I loved the trails, nature, and sights of the forest. It was fun getting to know the other persons that hike with you. The wildlife you see is extremely cool. We saw hawks, bald eagles, deer, ospreys, trout, and carp. This is why I love Minnesota Camps

Life in a cabin is about learning from others and with others. It is becoming a team of understanding. Sure, sometimes we had our fights or minor issues, but almost always they were resolved and we grew closer as a team for them.

The Nature Center is a great place to learn about Nature and the beautiful environment of the North woods. We always have fun this is not school. The animals in the zoo are fun to take care of, especially since my mom, back home, will only let me have a cat. It is kinda like being at an animal camp.

I plan on going back to Swift Nature Camp for all these reasons. If you come for just one summer, I know you will feel as I do. So, I'll see yawl in the North woods of Minnesota this summer!

New New York Yankee Stadium

Opening day for the new Yankee Stadium is not too far away now; while for eager fans, it may seem like an eternity, Spring 2009 will soon be upon us and fans will be able to see and experience the latest chapter in Yankees history for themselves. While there are some who are of the opinion that with the old stadium an important piece of New York history will be lost; and indeed Yankee Stadium has seen a lot of changes in the South Bronx in the last 86 years, the new stadium promises to be something which fans new and old alike will enjoy. The new $1.3 billion Yankee Stadium will be a worthy addition to the Yankees and to the up and coming South Bronx.

The idea of moving the stadium is not a new one - in 1980, the owner wanted to move the stadium to an area considered safer than the South Bronx was at the time. Ideas were talked over and discarded over the following years; in the meantime, the team acquired a legion of new fans and the neighborhood improved considerably. The idea of a new stadium remained - but it was now to be built in the Bronx.

Financial considerations were now the biggest obstacle to building new Yankee Stadium. During the last part of his term, the Mayor of New York came up with some plans to aid both the Yankees and the Mets to build new stadiums. Giuliani wanted to support the teams building desires by paying for half of the construction to the tune of eight hundred million dollars as well as an additional three hundred and ninety million for more transportation. The Mets would receive eighty thousand more in debt forgiveness and both teams would receive twenty-five million more for planning. To make the deal even sweeter the teams would have no property taxes, no sales tax and receive low cost electricity from the state. In addition, they would be allowed to keep 100% of parking fees, 96% of ticket fees, and 100% of all other generated revenue.

The plan also waived sales and property taxes on the teams, would have provided both stadiums with state subsidized low cost electricity and allowed the teams to keep 100% of parking and other revenue brought in by the stadiums, with the city receiving a mere 4% of the ticket sales. Things looked a little less rosy for New York's ball clubs when current Mayor Michael Bloomberg too office. Mayor Bloomberg decided to exercise the escape clause provided for in the contract - however, the contract also included a provision allowing the teams to leave the city should the escape clause be used! Happily, the city and the two teams came to a new agreement and planning for new Yankees and Mets stadiums kept moving along.

Much planning has gone into designing the new Yankee Stadium. The exterior will be built of Indiana Limestone and will encircle the perimeter of the entire property it will look a lot like the original park did before renovations in 1974. Keeping with the theme of the original stadium a replica of the copper frieze that adorned the first stadium will be built. Along with the original feel will come better amenities and two new restaurants that will be open year round.

Whether you are a fan of the new Yankee Stadium or fear that a vital piece of Bronx history will be lost, it can be agreed upon that the new home of the Yankees will be one which preserves the character of the old while offering the comfort of the new. The construction of the first Yankee Stadium was a risk taken by the team; one which paid off for the team and the city - and it looks like history just might repeat itself in the Bronx next spring.

HSE Protects UK Citizens

The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) enforces regulations related to gas mains and services, ensuring the safety of UK citizens. UK residents and contractors with questions regarding the installation and maintenance of gas lines are encouraged to read HSE publications and call the agency for advice and answers to gas supply questions.

A common gas mains and services issue is the required depth of the pipes. The Pipelines Safety Regulations 1996 (PSR) defines the required design and installation procedures for gas pipes, but does not give pipe depth requirements. The HSE publication, A Guide to the Pipelines Safety Regulations 1996, and the HSC (Health and Safety Commission) publication, Approved Code of Practice and Guidance Design, Construction and Installation of Gas Service Pipes, give specific information about minimum pipe depth. HSE monitors gas pipe installation in the UK to make certain gas main pipes are a minimum of 750mm below the ground and service pipes are buried at least 375mm on private land and at least 450mm in areas with footpaths and highways.

Someone digging a garden can damage a gas main or service just as easily as someone digging a foundation for a home can. In order to help everyone follow PSR regulation 15, which states that no one is allowed to damage a gas pipeline, HSE provides two written sources of information. The information sheet, Avoiding Damage to Buried Services, and publication HSG47, Avoiding Danger from Underground Services, give guidance to those that are at risk of damaging a pipeline.

HSE also regulates the conditions of pipelines according to regulation 13 of PSR. Iron pipes were commonly used in past years, and HSE has mandated that all iron gas pipes that are in close proximity of occupied property be decommissioned and replaced with pipes made of materials such as polyethylene. Because of the size of the existing gas pipe network, a deadline of March 2032 was set to give pipeline operators ample time to complete this project. HSE expects operators to replace any pipes that are known to be a threat to the public immediately.

HSE is monitoring the highly publicized Milford Haven Pipeline, which is owned by National Grid Gas. National Grid Gas must follow all established regulations for pipe design, system construction, and operation. The pipeline operators must comply with the health and safety laws of gas mains and services. HSE will inspect the construction and operation of the project to verify that all regulations are met. The agency will also determine land planning zones for areas affected by the pipeline construction. HSE regulation will continue after the completion of the pipeline.

HSE uses the pipeline diameter, pipe wall thickness, operating pressure limit, the class of steel used to manufacture the pipe and the burial depth to determine how property around the pipeline should be used. A quantified risk assessment (QRA) for thermal radiation is calculated, and HSE gives planning advice according to the findings.
