If you have decided to get a tattoo, you should be careful in choosing your design. Tattoos last as long as your skin. You can choose to remember a loved one, or an important event with a tattoo or you can choose to make a personal statement. For some people, thinking about the tattoo design that they want to have on their bodies is very easy. But for others, finding the perfect tattoo is like deciding on their firstborn child's name-it is difficult because of so many options.

You may find yourself unable to decide because their are so many options. Here are some tips to help you find exactly the right tattoo.

Start by looking at designs online in the many tattoo galleries. Many artists have their own websites to showcase their unique designs. thin about the style that best represents you. The are tribal designs, Asian designs and representations of fine art. Take your time and look at as many designs as possible before you make your choice. You don't want to get your tattoo and then see a design you like better. Look for the image that is perfect for you.

Visit local tattoo artists and ask to see their portfolios. These are photos that show their past work. Looking at a portfolio will tell you not only about the artists designs, but about his skill in recreating those designs. A great design that's poorly done won't make the statement you want. Make sure the shop is licensed and uses proper sterile protocol. An infection will ruin the best tattoo and leave you with a scar. Each artist has a different style and technique and this will influence the way he executes your design. Make sure you feel confident in your artist's skills before proceeding with your tattoo.

Deciding where on your body to place the tattoo can be another dilemma. If you work in a conservative atmosphere, it best to put your tattoo in an inconspicuous location. It's okay if it shows at the beach, but you don't want it to show at work. tattoos can be placed just anywhere on your body, so consider your reason for getting the tattoo when you choose it's location. Even if you aren't able to display your art at work, you can put on your shoulder or back.

Sometimes you may find the perfect design in a book, or in a piece of artwork that has nothing to do with tattoos. Take a picture of your idea to your tattoo artist and ask if it can be rendered as a tattoo. He may be able to draw a picture showing how the design will look as a tattoo. In many cases it will look a bit different than the original, because there are certain limitations on tattoo art that don't exist on canvas or paper.

Tattoos are a very personal form of art to the artist and the person receiving the tattoo. Give your yourself the time to get it exactly right, because you won't get a second chance. Planning in advance will insure that you will be happy with your tattoo now and in the years to come.
