All Shelving Is Not Created Equally

By Mary Jane Foster

I'm going to assume that you arrived at this page in your search for information about the various styles of shelving. Maybe you've found that the bathroom is altogether too cluttered, or the pantry has become an abyss. Or perhaps you've 'lost' your garage and can't remember the last time you actually parked your car in there!

Take the garage for example. This is generally an area in most homes that tends to become cluttered very quickly for want of a better place to put things. If you have the space, metal or steel open back shelving, like the type you usually find in the commercial sector, is ideal for storing heavy items and still have easy access to everything.

Break it down into chunks. Firstly, in what room do you need new (or more) shelving? If it's the bathroom, you may want to consider both style and functionality, as it is usually the most frequently used room in the house, by both family and guests.

There is often not a lot of room in there so you may find that wall mounted corner shelving is a practical solution. Depending on the theme of your bathroom, you could use shelves made of glass, wood, plastic or even covered wire.

For obvious reasons, the pantry doesn't need to look pretty, but it does need to be organised for ease of use. Being able to reach in and place your hand on exactly what you're after saves a whole lot of time and frustration. Plastic and wood work well in pantries, but glass is not recommended for safety reasons.

The garage is usually, for most people, an area that needs a shelving solution, badly! Regardless of the style, the material used here is often metal...heavy duty enough to hold a lot of weight! An example is the Rubbermaid Fast Track organisation system. It is wall mounted and can hold everything from power tools to bicycles.

Rubbermaid have a range of shelving and storage systems for all of the above areas of the home and others not even mentioned. It's space saving door hanging and spice racks create much needed room in smaller pantries and they even have a modular container line available too.

Many people use this plastic shelving to store stationery and other necessities in the office. In other commercial areas though, like factories for example, metal and steel open back shelving is more suitable to store large quantities of merchandise with easy access.

These are just a few areas within the home that may benefit from certain styles of shelving. Considering the material used is also important, not only in terms of practicality, but in blending with the decor of your room. Now, with an idea of what is available, learn more about the style of shelving that you think will suit your needs best and go ahead and get it for your home.
