Build Your Own Solar Panel System

By Carson Solis

When you consider the severity of the energy crisis facing the world today, it only makes sense to consider investing in alternative energy solutions to power your home. If you build your own solar panel system for use in your personal residence, you not only are instrumental in helping fight the global energy shortages where you live, but you also contribute to saving power for the rest of the world. That's not only sensible, it's a moral imperative.

The option to build your solar panel or wind power system is one that has become very popular, as they are small in scale, easy to install, and inexpensive. While wind power is a wonderful solution to lowering energy costs, it isn't always an option for people who are living in urban areas, as it requires more room and a consistent wind speed in order to operate optimally. But if you live in a less wide open space, then choosing to build your solar panels yourself is ideal, as all you need is plenty of sunlight.

There's a variety of components to a solar power system. Generally, people choose from among these options to create a solution that fits their needs. Among the components are the following:

Solar cookers: Among the most popular of the uses for solar energy is a solar cooker, used to great advantage in many homes. Its useful features include:

*Healthy cooking: Using a solar cooker to prepare your food ensures even, flameless and healthy food preparation. A small cooker can even accommodate enough food to feed 5 people at one time.

*Variety of cooking methods: Using the same system, you can bake, roast and boil, just like with a conventional oven.

*Fuel saving: As a solar cooker doesn't need any fuel other than the power of sunlight, you save power and the environment.

*Zero emissions: With no gases emitted, and no residue left behind, solar cookers are extremely environmentally friendly food preparation systems.

Solar generators: A solar generator is what powers your electrical appliances utilizing solar energy. Photovoltaic cells are used, in which the electrical energy is stored for future use, so that you may light your home even after the sun has gone down. When you build your solar panel system, you will be saving power and money, as it becomes possible to run your appliances without having to rely on the public grid.

Solar thermal system. This is what provides for your home's temperature needs. Heating your water and your home at a steady temperature is possible when you build your solar panel system, and thanks to their increasing popularity, their costs have gone down and their aesthetic appeal has improved. They are no longer the bulky, homely devices they used to be!
