Make You Cast Iron Radiator Look Better With Paint

By Timothy King

For longer than a century, people have been choosing cast iron radiators for their style and their utility. However, like anything else, the years aren't always kind to these devices. This can leave you with a useful radiator that just looks bad.

One of the easiest ways to improve the look and performance of your radiator is as simple as applying a coat of paint. This has additional advantages to the aesthetic. Indeed, the advantages to painting a cast iron radiator are not just for the eyes.

One of the worst things about older radiators is the amount of wasteful heat they put out. Paint can reduce this by as much as twenty percent if done correctly. This will help your bottom line when energy bills come around at the end of the month.

A couple of crucial decisions should be made before getting to the actual painting. The first is the paint that you want. Go for a long living and good looking paint. You'll need to decide on an approach, as well.

There are two general approaches to take - you can either strip off the old paint or just cover up what's already there. This is a choice that you have to make, but in all honesty it's definitely wiser to take the time to strip and sand the radiator first.

In either case, make sure that you first clean and prime the surface. Priming should be done with a zinc or zinc chloride based solution if you want the paint to last for a while. In addition, make sure to use an oil based paint for longevity.

Brushing the paint on gently will ensure that you don't damage the cast iron. Be patient, and make sure that you hit every angle before you're done. This is crucial - so don't be lazy.

Once the job is done, open the windows, turn the radiator on, and clear out of the house. The paint will dry soon and the new paint smell will go away a little while later. With some effort, you can really make your home look great by painting your cast iron radiator.
