Bringing The Old Back To Life

By Cleo Naftern

If you have old furniture in your house, you do not have to toss it out right away. One way that you can make your used chairs, tables or armoires look like new is to paint it. You can use a variety of different techniques when you paint your old furniture to look like new that will end up giving it a whole new look.

Used chairs, tables, cabinets and shelves will look brand new with a fresh paint. Choose colors that appeal to you or better yet, one that suits the rest of the room. This is your chance to change the furnishings if you've been bothered by the mismatch in the color scheme but are wary of buying new items. Replace the old color with a more suitable one.

Before you start painting you will want to take out any drawers as well as take off the handles. If the furniture is varnished or has a veneer, you are going to have to paint over it with primer. Paint primer will make paint stick to anything, even tiled floors. You will need to give all veneered pieces a couple of coats of paint primer that you can find in your paint store, to get it ready for painting.

There are hundreds of colors to choose from that anything you like for your furniture's new look can be easily done. Match it with the room's motif or use the color to enhance the space. For a change in color, consider doing a contrast for a total transformation. For example, if your chest drawer has a dark tone you can paint it a pastel shade this time.

For an artsy approach, you can create special effects to make a furniture look stylishly "worn-out" by rubbing off some spots in the furniture with sand paper.

Another painting technique is crackle painting, which is used for making a furniture look like an antique. Crackle paints are available in crafts store or home decor shops.

Lastly, the use of stencil design or hand stamps. This method is a great way to finish off any painting job. Putting a decorative design is a nice touch to complete the upgrade.

Using stencil designs or hand stamps is one way that you can refinish your old furniture after painting. If you do not want it to look too plain, you can add a decorative paint touch. Once you start to paint old furniture, you will never get rid of old furniture again.
