Mirror On The Wall: Improving How A Space Looks

By Julie Grimes

Mirrors are more than just sheets of super heated sand...they are portals to your soul. Okay! That's enough of the waxing philosophic. Mirrors, when strategically placed, can shoulder many different duties.

A mirror near the front door serves as a last minute touch up station before you leave for work, a date, a night out with your friends, or even a quick trip to the post office. A mirror hung in the hallway is less about use and more about decoration. A mirror in a bedroom is the perfect way to make sure your pants are the right fit or your skirt is the right length. A mirror in the bathroom is an absolute must in order for you to perform all your daily hygienic routines. Brushing your hair and shaving your face would be mighty difficult without a mirror.

Mirrors aren't just about utility; they are also about a sense of style- adding a bit of sophistication to your home. A framed mirror outlined with delicate or bold wrought iron scroll work would be a stylish addition to any home's accent wall. A gilded mirror adds flair to a neutral colored wall. A star shaped mirror will certainly spruce up any little girl's room. A mirror will add dimension to a small space.

Older homes tend to have much smaller rooms. Hanging a mirror from a prominent wall can give the illusion of more space. If you are decorating your home in preparation to sell, you will find that combining mirrors with woven area rugs is sure to catch the eye of any discerning home buyer. Area rugs are beautiful, versatile, luxurious, and can add color and pattern to an otherwise dull room. This is an important trick you can use when trying to sell a home.

If you have a wall or space that is strangely proportioned, there usually isn't much you can put in those spaces to create a sophisticated or contemporary feel that doesn't also make the space look cluttered. Small spaces, large spaces, octagonal spaces- it doesn't matter what size or shape the space, there is a mirror out there that will fit it. Sure, you can hang a picture there, but pictures have a way of becoming old hat when you have to look at them every day. Mirrors always offer a different picture every time.

Mirrors can be simple or ornate, inexpensive or decadent, small or large, square or circular. There are few standard home decorating pieces that can match the diversity of the mirror. You can have a mirror in your home, your office, your dorm room or your home gym. If you want to create a space that is useful and beautiful; paint the walls a color fitting your taste, hang a mirror, carefully place a few area rugs (woven or braided) over your plain carpet, and furnish to your sense of style. That sounds easy doesn't it?

Scrap the thought that mirrors are mere objects. They are not. Aside from showing us the faces we can't conceal behind layers of makeup or gook of sunblock, mirrors are simple yet amazing decorative items that you shouldn't live without.
